Back to the BlackBerry

I switched back. And hopefully won't switch yet again!

It’s been a couple of months since I switched back to the BBerry, but I held off on writing this post in case I switched back (again).

I’m a recovering commitment-phobe.  So sue me.

I switched back because of the cost; the BlackBerry international plan is 1/3 of the iPhone plan.  As a fiscally-cautious team member of the start-up I work at, I just could not justify any reason to stick with the iPhone, hence the switch.

Don’t cry for me though, iPhone users.  I’m thrilled to have returned to a phone with fantastic battery life (sorry iPhone, but you can’t handle my hours-long teleconferences without recharge(s) during the day), the ability to crank out e-mails faster than on my actual computer (scary), and BBM.

Oh, BBM.  I love you.  You make my heart sing and allow me to avoid actual phone conversations.

Someone (and I wish I knew who, because this phrase is brilliant) stated “The iPhone is a toy.  The BlackBerry is a tool.”  He further clarified that he needs a tool for his phone.  And so do I.

Because beyond the subpar battery life and the difficulty to type, I get so distracted by all my apps on the iPhone.  I would be flipping between the NYTimes crossword puzzle, reading an e-mail, and responding to a text simultanously.

This is probably why my battery life was so abysmal.  But I digress.

As a person with self-diagnosed ADD, I can’t have so many distractions on hand.  One would say “just delete those apps,”…but I can’t.  I love my games, my sports scores, and the latest episode of Real Housewives to give it up.  This is probably why I could never get a Droid.

So going back to the BlackBerry was good for me, because the app options are fewer.  And I like that all messages (e-mails, BBMs, texts, GChats, and tweets) come to a consolidated message folder.  And I like that I can actually type well enough on the phone to USE GChat.

Plus, now that the browser has improved significantly, the Kindle and WordPress apps are available on the phone, and between Mapquest and Poynt (think Around Me, for you iPhoners), I never go hungry, lost, or bored.  Just like I had with the iPhone.

Except with better battery life.

For the record: I got the Bold 9700.  I love the touchpad over the trackball–I don’t know about you, but my trackball would get stuck or break. The color and graphics on the phone are totally vibrant.  I like the fact that the camera has a flash (an upside over the iPhone), and that the BlackBerry software is now free and the syncing between my phone and Exchange is seamless.  The Facebook for BlackBerry app needs some serious work (it is slow and clunky), but Twitter for BlackBerry is PHENOMENAL.

I guess when all is said and done, I’m just a BlackBerry person.  And I’m perfectly fine with that.
