At Home Hot Yoga

I really enjoy being at home.  After sleeping on hotel beds, living out of a suitcase, and having to be dressed up for dinner at nice restaurants, I quite enjoy sitting on my bed, eating a place of daal and rice, and catching up on reality TV garbage.

There’s just one issue.  My bedroom is hot.

Not just a bit warmer than the rest of the rooms in the house, but a good 20 degrees hotter than the family room downstairs.  As summer has finally graced us with her presence, my room has become a sauna, which makes for an uncomfortable night’s sleep.

It does, however, make it an excellent location for an at-home hot yoga workout.

I’ve been practicing yoga on and off for about 7 years – it was the only workout to help me shred the Freshman 15, helps calm me down, and is a workout that requires the least amount of suitcase space.  When traveling, I’ve been taking classes in new yoga studios in the city I’m in (but that’s for another post), but at home I enjoy doing yoga at the end of the day to unwind.  And my sauna of a bedroom has turned into the best location for my nightly yoga.

My yoga routine includes about 10 sun salutations, a couple of warrior flows, and hitting the chair, tree, triangle poses.  I throw in pigeon and a headstand at the end for good measure.  If what I’ve said makes zero sense to you, here are some of my favorite yoga videos (I’ve downloaded them onto my computer so I can mix up the routine when needed):

Elle Make Better Yoga: Tara Stiles is an amazing yoga instructor, and I try and hit up a class at her Strala Yoga studio when in NYC.

Body by Bethenny: Yes, I’m a Real Housewives addict, but I have nothing but good things to say about this DVD.  It will kick your butt and keep you entertained with Bethenny’s wise-ass commentary throughout.

Shiva Rea: Flow Yoga for Beginners: Flow yoga is great for those days when I want more of a heartrate-accelerating workout.  I am still a novice, and this beginner video still kicks my butt, and in a 80-degree room it makes the workout all the more effective.

Do you have a favorite yoga video/routine?  What’s your preferred way to stay in shape?  Give me more ideas, please!  I have one of my best friend’s wedding next week and need to get my arms more toned in the next 9 days…
