How-To: Sock Bun

February 22, 2012

I have a love-hate relationship with my hair.

The good – it’s thick, long, and relatively easy to style.
The bad – it’s thick, long, and a pain in the arse to wash.

I’m a huge fan of dry shampoo and blowouts at Drybar – they help me maintain my sanity, and from having to wash my hair myself regularly.  The latest discovery to be added to that list is…the sock bun.

After seeing Erica from PS I Made This rock it on her Instagram photos, I set out to try the style for myself.  And I quickly became addicted.

And now you can too.  Here’s the step-by-step, below:

I haven’t been able to do this successfully yet, but maybe this will give me the confidence to try again.

Teasing the entire outside of the ponytail is the trick. Let me know how it turns out for you!

OOh, so cute! I too have recently become a fan of the sock bun – but I do mine slightly differently. Instead of putting the donut around the base of the pony, I hold it at the ends and then wrap the ends in and around the sock until the whole thing comes to the base of the pony. Kinda hard to explain – here’s where I learned my way: the video is not that great…and wait until she gets to the second version to see what I’m talking about (about 4:00)

Mrs. B – I’ll definitely have to try that out! Thanks for posting the tip.

  • Grace – Stripes & Sequins

Hitha, I absolutely LOVE this!! I am dying to try it out.

    • hitha

Can’t wait to see how it looks on you, Grace!

  • krista

I’m wondering how long my hair would need to be to accomplish this successfully? I’m growing it out. I just don’t think I’m there yet.

    • hitha

I think it can be pulled off with shoulder-length hair. Let me know how it turns out for you!

  • deanne

Doh- now I have to grow my hair so I can do this!
