How To: Pack Toiletries

Looking at the quart-sized bag and then the products strewn across my bathroom counter, I realized that there was no way I could pack toiletries to toss into my suitcase and skip the check-in for my upcoming flight.  “No way, in hell,” I thought, going to the kitchen for a large Ziploc.  Thank goodness for my premier status – at least, I don’t have to pack to check in this beast.

Too often, people forego packing carry-on only because they can’t pare down their toiletries to the mandatory 3.4 fluid ounce size.  I certainly was that person, until I realized that the 30 minutes spent waiting for a suitcase added up to over 50 hours in six months.

There are much better ways to spend 50 hours.  I could finish a Game Of Thrones book (and another half) in that time.

So, I changed how I pack toiletries to complement my carry-on – and I’m here to show you how to do the same.  The video above walks you through exactly how I pack toiletries.  Below, I’ve included some helpful tips and resources for helping you pack in 3 fluid oz or less.

1.  SOLIDS need not to fall under the 3.4 fl oz size.  Solid deodorants, foundations in compact form, and tins of solid perfume and lip balm can skip the baggie and go directly into a pocket of your bag, or your toiletry case.

2.  Invest in a high quality toiletry bag.  I’m a huge fan of the ML Traveler by Stephanie Johnson (as seen above).

3.  Pack an extra quart-size Ziploc bag, in case the one holding all your products breaks (hint – it will, so stay prepared).  Purchase bags intended for freezer items – they hold up better than the flimsy sandwich variety.

4.  Skip the sad drugstore aisle of travel products and hit up 3FlOz for travel sizes of all your favorite premium brands.  I swear by the Serge Normant hair products (dry shampoo for the win), Ole Henriksen face products, Supergoop for sunscreen (the wipes rock and don’t count against your liquid allotment), and EBOOST for energy bursts during my trip.  Sign up for their newsletter to stay up-to-date on their sales.

5.  Keep your toiletry bag packed.  My ML Traveler and baggie of liquids are prepacked and live in my suitcase, which saves time when packing/unpacking for  trips.  I keep a list of all the products in my closet and mark things off as they run low, so I can order them before my next trip.  (Bonus – 3FlOz also delivers to hotels, which is fantastic when I’m in the midst of a travel spree).

Disclosure – the ML Traveler bag was gifted by Stephanie Johnson, and products have been gifted from 3FlOz.  All opinions are my own, and I only work with brands I trust and use myself.
