Must-Read: Think

- Think from Lisa Bloom on Vimeo –

A frightening thing happened a few days ago.  In conversation with some friends, I was able to rattle off the intimate details of Kim Kardashian’s wedding…but unable to state the number of girls forced into sexual slavery worldwide (an issue I am passionate about).

Yikes.

It was fortuitous, then, that I spotted a link to Lisa Bloom’s book review on one of my favorite blogs.  Just the title had me heading to Amazon to download the book on my iPad: Think: Straight Talk for Women to Stay Smart in a Dumbed-Down World.

The video above uncovers some frightening statistics – women can name more Kardashians than wars we are in.  25% of women would rather win America’s Next Top Model than the Nobel Peace Prize.  A significant amount of women would rather lose their ability to read than their figures.  Cringe.

I devoured Lisa’s book in a day and a half.  While the first half was a terrifying eye-opener in the state of current affairs (and my ignorance on some of them), the second half reassured me and laid out a framework for getting back on track.

My three takeaways from this book are:
Turn off the TV and read.  Read books, newspapers, insightful magazines, and anything that does not discuss the latest drama of the Real Housewives.
Encourage fruitful discussion among your friends.  If you know me, be prepared for me get this book in your hands and not speak to you until you’ve read it.  (You may as well save yourself the headache and purchase it here).
Find a cause – and get involved.  I’m passionate about fighting sexual trafficking and slavery – an issue that plagues my home country of India.  Somaly Mam’s Project Futures Global lays out how to get involved.  Don’t know where to start?  Read Nicholas Kristof and Sheryl WuDunn’s compelling book Half The Sky, and find a cause that speaks to you.

Put down the Us Weekly and pick up this book.  And start thinking again.
