The Issue – Partisanship

by hitha on August 31, 2012

I warned you that these types of posts would be coming.  They’re here.

First up, some ground rules for The Issue:

  • Share your thoughts in the comments below – this is a safe space to be heard.
  • No calling anyone idiots, stupid, or ignorant because of their beliefs.  Unlike our leaders, we know how to act like adults.
  • Recommend articles and other sources for people to read.

Today’s issue – Partisianship.

Rather than hearing concrete plans for progress, the current political discourse is one of whining, finger pointing, and name calling.  It’s kindergarten all over again.

It’s also the worse time for this type of behavior from our supposed leaders.  With the economy at the bottom of the gutter, two wars still being fought overseas, a high unemployment rate, increasing energy costs…we’re pretty much shit out of luck.  And our government can’t get their heads out of their asses to pass some laws that will actually help.

This has to be one of the ugliest presidential campaigns in recorded history.  And at a perilous time in our nation’s progress.

It’s pretty much a disaster.  And one that no one is talking about.  So I am.

We need to communicate to our politicians (and the press – they’re just as guilty of this as the candidates are) that this is ridiculous.  That this type of campaigning is dumb.  That their children and grandchildren know how to act better.

If you agree with me, please share this video on Twitter, Facebook, Google+.  And leave a comment on your idea for how we can tell our leaders that we don’t want to hear their bitching and moaning anymore.  That they better start talking about the issues, and plans.

And that they’re acting like children.

Discuss.

Hitha! You are awesome! This type of post is so refreshing on a fashion/lifestyle blog. I couldn’t agree more. I am so disgusted by all the finger pointing and child like behavior that is going on in politics right now and completely getting in the way of politicians making any real progress to improve the many very pending issues seriously affecting Americans today.

Say what you want about the Ryan Budget – it is at least a written budget that has passed the house, twice. Obama hasn’t even done that (his last budget failed 99-0 in the Senate, and failed by almost as bad margins in the House). I don’t agree with the Ryan Budget (I do think defence cuts need to happen) but it’s at least a serious plan.

As for the “ugliness” – fuck yes it is. They’ve accused a former Mormon bishop, a man who’s contributed 15% of his income the last two years (and safely assuming many more before that), a man so clean not just is there nothing in the closet, THERE IS NO CLOSET, of felonious behaviour, and of contributing to the death of a woman. That is low. You may not like Gov. Romney’s politics or policy, but you can’t in good conscience be critical of the man. And I’ll gladly concede that GOP peeps have gone way the fuck too far in criticising Pres. Obama, in which they diverged from the political/policy to the personal.

Thursday night – a friend of mine posted a comment on facebook about how hearing Romney’s speech – he was motivated to contribute to Obama because he felt that the Dems no longer had it in the bag – I commented (and it’s worth repeating): ” I will say, when he said: “Every new college graduate thought they’d have a good job by now, a place of their own, and that they could start paying back some of their loans and build for the future.” and then later when he said “Does it (America) fail to find the jobs that are needed for 23 million people and for half the kids graduating from college? No.” – as one of those recent college grads who is effectively unemployed since I’m so underemployed, I’m irked at where this country currently is, and as much as I’d like to be able to vote on things other than basic economic questions, I can say that my life is stalled, I’d like to pay off the over 20k in debt hanging over my head, and move out of my parents house, and start building my future – none of those things can I do w/o stable employment – that yes, I was moved, hell, I almost cried (not something I do all that often) because of the fact I want a life of my own, and in this environment, for all the reasons above, I’ve not been able to craft one. So, yeah, I was planning to vote for Romney before, I’m actually excited to now. Make of that what you will.”
