The Hit List – September 2015

Hit List September 2015

I like to mark September with a few rituals – purchase a new Eagles shirt, start fresh with a new notebook and set of pens (currently – a Baron Fig notebook and a Sharpie-esque pen from Pentel), and watch You’ve Got Mail yet again.

It’s a movie that made me fall in love twice – first, with New York and two, with witty banter and brute honesty being the foundation of a relationship. It also reignites my longstanding love affair with books and autumn.

Even though it didn’t start feeling like fall until last week.

I thought I had successfully avoided the KonMari craze until The Life-Changing Magic of Tidying Up showed up at my apartment, with strict instructions from my editor to read it to help refine my own manuscript. Not only did it inspire me to rewrite my book, it also transformed our entire apartment.

Granted, some of the closets are a still disaster, but cleaning them out has never brought me so much joy. *shakes head in shame*

I also dug into Happily Ali After, one of the OG funny essay books penned by a woman. I loved this more than Wentworth’s first (Ali In Wonderland), given how much I empathized with this book’s topics (marriage, career, and motherhood). It’s a fun, no-frills read that doesn’t take itself too seriously. I highly recommend it. More book recommendations here!

The weekdays of September fell into two camps – marathon writing/work days at home, or running around the city like a madwoman. For the latter, I wore a uniform of Old Navy striped shirts or an MM LaFleur Didion top, skinny pants or jeans, and a pair of M.Gemi flats (either this pointed pair or these comfortable loafers).

The days I worked from home? You could find me in a clean set of pajamas (with this supremely comfortable Cosabella bralettes – the only ones I’ve found that support a generous bust), playing this mammoth Grey’s Anatomy playlist, and sipping this tea while I worked. While I may have bought this Jonathan Adler candle specifically for the jar, the scent turned out to be a perfect transition from summer to fall. And thanks to Bethany, I found myself in a marathon re-watching of Grey’s Anatomy (which spurred the binge listening of the soundtrack). Was that not the perfect pilot for a television show? I say yes.
